Markelle Martin Scouting Report

Markelle Martin, FS, Oklahoma State
Height: 6’0″
Weight: 207

Strengths:

  • Great size and athleticism
  • Above average speed with great range
  • Big hitter, can really lay the wood
  • Plays huge in big games, defensive player of the game in 2010 Alamo Bowl
  • Solid overall production
  • Great instincts, reads the QBs eyes well
  • True centerfielder, shows well in zone coverage
  • Great closing speed
  • Very intelligent on and off the field
  • Hard worker

Weaknesses:

  • Stiff hips, high backpedal
  • Not ideally suited for man coverage
  • Takes poor angles at times
  • Often times gives up big plays while trying to make the big hit
  • Poor hands
  • Needs to learn to wrap up more consistently

NFL Comparison: Morgan Burnett

Markelle Martin is the top free safety in this weak class and is the only guy I’d feel really strongly about drafting in the first two days. Martin is a true centerfielder that has good instincts and is very good at reading QBs and getting to the ball. Martin uses his instincts and his closing speed to really shut down the deep passing game and he’s been either first or second in the passes defensed in his three years as a starter. Finished his career with 37 straight starts over a three year span. Martin is a bit of a tweener in some eyes as he’s certainly big enough to play strong safety but he plays more like a free safety. Martin has some noticeable flaws but all of them are correctable with good coaching and he’s certainly got the skillset to be an NFL starter. Missed spring ball in 2011 with a shoulder injury and missed two games early in 2009 with a hip injury. Excelled on special teams as a freshman. Martin is best suited to play the deep zone in a cover 2 or cover 3 look.
