My Thoughts on All Things NFL Draft

Chase Minnifield Scouting Report

Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 183

Strengths:

  • Great zone corner
  • Fluid hips
  • Great ball skills and superb hands
  • Great athlete
  • Solid speed
  • Good size with a great vertical
  • Experienced and talented return man
  • Great football pedigree
  • Hard hitter and willing tackler

Weaknesses:

  • Little to no experience in man coverage
  • Often goes for the big hit and therefore misses a lot of tackles
  • Deep speed is suspect
  • Not the most technically sound, causing him to give up some easy catches

NFL Comparison:   Asante Samuel

Chase Minnifield is probably the top zone corner in this draft. He would be a great asset for a team like Pittsburgh and their zone blitz as he has tons of experience playing in a zone and has proven to be a ballhawk at the college level. Minnifield is a better pro prospect than former teammates Chris Cook (34th overall selection in the 2010 draft) and Ras-I Dowling (33rd overall selection in the 2011 draft). Minnifield is the son of former Browns great Frank Minnifield. Frank was a four-time Pro Bowler, playing for the Browns from 1984-1992 and was named to the 80s All Decade team. Frank and fellow CB Hanford Dixon are responsible for naming the section of fans in Cleveland known as the Dawg Pound.
